The Anchoring Sound

Music......People say music is the universal language. There are studies about the frequencies and vibrations of certain music being used as therapy because it helps release chemicals in the brain. Music is everywhere. In the grocery store, humming softly in the background in doctor's offices, whispering in the elevator, pulsating through the speakers at your favorite restaurant and even when you are placed on hold on a phone call. Music is almost impossible to escape. So for a follower of Jesus Christ how should we approach music? Should we listen to secular or the same music as the unbeliever? If you’d asked me this question 4-5 years ago I would've had a totally different answer than I have now.

Hi, my name is Ayana and I am a music lover. I need music to motivate me when I workout, to help me clean my house a little faster and just feel good at after a long day of work. I have always loved music, especially rap and hip-hop music. I love poetry so rap music always had a special place in my heart. I love the combination of lyrical wittiness, metaphors, similes and self expression in rap. My guilty pleasure was female hip hop artists...... the raunchy ones. The ones that said they didn't need a man, they were only after the bag and sex. The ones that glamorized the life of being with multiple partners and showing off their bodies. Now picture me, who claimed to love & know Jesus Christ, claimed to love my husband and claimed to want to honor the Lord - blasting those lyrics in my earphones. It doesn't line up right?

So, that is exactly what the Holy Spirit convicted me of. How can we read the bible, see a Holy God's commandments, see Jesus's sacrifice on the cross and still entertain music that blatantly goes against His Word? Music that boasts about sexual immorality, greed, worshiping money, worshiping our own bodies and murder.  The bible speaks of people honoring the Lord with the lips but not with the hearts.

Mark 7:6 (NLT)

Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

I thought I was free to listen to that stuff because I didn't live that way. I thought I was just having fun but now I can see where the compromise was leaking into my life. I was beginning to view my husband and his authority in my marriage differently, I was unsatisfied with what I had and I started letting unclean language slip out during conversations. I know that ALL secular music doesn't reference sex, money, drugs and murder in an outright manner but I know that a majority of the music that is popular or playing on the radio does. You have to ask yourself if the music isn't uplifting Jesus Christ and His ways then what is it uplifting? Music is spiritual. There are so many instances in the bible where music was played to get rid of demons or to help defeat the enemy on the battlefield.

1 Samuel 16:23 (NLT)

And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.

2 Kings 3: 15-16 (NLT)

Now bring me someone who can play the harp.” While the harp was being played, the power of the Lord came upon Elisha, and he said, “This is what the Lord says: This dry valley will be filled with pools of water!

I thought I would never be able to get out of the chokehold that secular music had on me. I prayed and God answered. I feel an intimacy with Jesus that I didn't feel before. Now I fill my ears with music that uplifts the Savior. He is such a good Father  and provider that he  has lead me to discover some great Christian artists in the genres of  Jazz,  R & B and Hip Hop. I will share my playlist and songs on the blog so you can check it out. I strongly encourage you to talk to the Lord about this and ask for discernment from the Holy Spirit. He wants you to be anchored in Him in every way.
